Konzert: Uraufführung "Das Lied von der Erde" mit Neukompositionen von Ying WANG

May 14, 2023 | 07:00 PM

This weekend, the concert series "Confucius and the New World Order", which was jointly launched last year by KlangForum Heidelberg, the Confucius Institute Heidelberg and the Worldmaking Kolleg of CATS, will be continued in a second performance. This time, the focus is on Mahler’s "The Song of the Earth” in dialogue with Intermezzi by Shanghai-born and Berlin-based composerYing WANG “Of Detours and Updates” (world premiere).

Time & Location:

Sunday, May 14 at 7 PM, Kunsthalle Mannheim

The libretto of Gustav Mahler’s “Song of the Earth” is based on Chinese poetry reinterpreted by Hans Bethge. Wang's intermezzi use poems by contemporary writers: illustrious figures such as Charta 2008-initiator and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo and his wife Liu Xia, (dismissed) Peking University Law Professor Xu Zhangrun, and Liao Yiwu, exiled writer, all of them supporters of the Tiananmen Protest Movements and an anonymous Kuang Ren (Human Mine) whose name already bears a critical edge—the system exploiting humans as resources in a mine.  All of these texts offer a lament—thus echoing Mahler’s composition, his very personal response to the death of his daughter—but Wang goes much further, as she inscribes herself in an age-old Chinese intellectual tradition of 憂國—worrying about one’s country and protesting injustice.

Tickets for the premiere of this new, transculturally conceived, "Song of the Earth" are available at the box office or online at the KlangForum Heidelberg website; tickets for students: 6 EUR.
