Short Biography 

Since August 2021, Elena Meyer-Clement is an associate professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Before moving to Copenhagen, she was an assistant professor of China’s economy and society and vice director of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS) at Freie Universität Berlin. She has an MA in Chinese Studies and Political Science from the University of Hamburg, and a doctoral degree from the University of Tübingen. Her first book investigates developments of party-state control and institutional change in China’s private film and music industries. Since 2012, her research has focused mainly on local governance and China’s urbanization in rural and semi-urban areas.

Project

This sub-project of the joint center "Worldmaking from a global perspective: a dialogue with China (BMBF, 2020-23) investigates the concrete political and societal effects of globalization in China’s cities from a social science perspective. Main foci of research are China’s authoritarian government structures and forms of urban governance, as well as social interaction and communication in specific societal groups. The project is co-led by Prof. Dr. Björn Alpermann (Universität Würzburg) und Prof. Dr. Elena Meyer-Clement (University of Copenhagen).
